He died so that we could live. The Scripture is clear that those who are apart from Christ are dead in their sins. That’s what we were, dead apart from Him. There was no hope for life in us because of our sin.
Ephesians 2:1 ( NKJV ) And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins
There was no life and no hope of life in us. But Jesus has, by His grace, made us to be alive. We were brought back to life. We are alive forevermore because of His grace.
1 Corinthians 15:22 ( NKJV ) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
Romans 6:11 ( NKJV ) Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We are now dead to the power of sin, dead to the punishment of sin, dead to the realm of sin, but alive in and through Jesus Christ. And we will live forever because of His grace.
Our lives were spent in darkness and wandering and would have continued that way except for His grace. Isaiah said it well:
Isaiah 59:9 ( NKJV ) Therefore justice is far from us,
Nor does righteousness overtake us;
We look for light, but there is darkness!
For brightness, but we walk in blackness!
But, we no longer walk in darkness. Now, the light of Jesus Christ is within us.
John 8:12 ( NKJV ) Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Ephesians 5:8 ( NKJV ) For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Not only darkness but trouble followed us all our days. There was no hope in those times of trouble because we were apart from the only source of help. Again it is Isaiah who says:
Isaiah 8:22 ( NKJV ) Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.
Our Lord has given us His peace. His peace overcomes all our trouble if we trust in His grace.
John 14:27 ( NKJV ) Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
I could go on for a long time with these amazing changes in our lives. He has done so much for us. Let me just point out a couple more.
Do you realize that we used to be enemies of God. You maybe didn’t think of yourself as God’s enemy, but the truth is that everyone who is a servant of evil is an enemy of God.
Colossians 1:21 ( NKJV ) And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
Romans 5:10 ( NKJV ) For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
According to the Scriptures we were saved while we were still enemies of the Lord. What are we now? We are the farthest thing from enemies, we are His children.
Romans 8:16-17 ( NKJV ) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
That may be the most significant change of all. We who once were so far from God that He considered us His enemies have now become His children… by His grace.
If you enjoy the blessing of God’s salvation this morning, remember that it is a gift of God’s great love. At a time when you were in need, with nothing to offer, He reached down to you and saved you. That’s grace!
