To Do List

I was going to call this the Ten Commandments of Grace, but most of us who have discovered the grace of God are challenged by the idea of commandments.  They sound a lot like the legalism of our past.  Yet, God has called us, even under grace, to do certain things.  So, for now, I’ll just refer to a “to do list.”

Here’s the first one. . .

We are supposed to rest.  Oh, I know that sounds like just the opposite of a “to do list.”  Our lists usually delineate the work and responsibility we have.  In fact, many times they are lists of our frustrations and failures.  On some days we might call them our “burden lists.”

The point of resting in the Lord is neither laziness nor inactivity.  The point is the release of the burden.  It isn’t that these things are not important; it’s remembering that there are things that are more important.  Rest comes when we stop taking the daily chores of life so seriously.

Listen to the command:

Return to your rest, O my soul, For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. Psalms 116:7

Stop worrying.  Stop fighting.  Give the burden over to the Lord who loves you.  He has blessed you and He will bless you.  You can trust Him.

For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15

“Quietness and confidence.”  Wow!  When was the last time you enjoyed the quietness of your life?  When was the last time you stopped and thought about your confidence?  Yet, the Lord says that’s where your strength will be found.  There is nothing to fear.  You can trust the Lord.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.   Matthew 11:28-29

And there it is.  He didn’t say there would be no yoke.  He just connected His yoke with rest.  You will find rest as you walk with Jesus.

What are you supposed to be doing in this Christian life?  Resting in the peace and faithfulness of Jesus.  He is with you.  You can trust Him.

  1. Beautiful post. Rest is one of the hardest things I’ve had to step into, but in this place I’ve found God to be a Verb instead of a Noun. As I rest, He becomes the action… Is truly a beautiful, life-changing place to be…
