Why I Celebrate Christmas – 4

… and not some generic holiday.

Happy Holidays!  Let’s all gather around the holiday tree and sing holiday songs.  Then we can open holiday gifts and share in a special holiday meal.  Aren’t the holiday decorations pretty?

But hold it!  What holiday is it?  Oh, just a holiday.  It can be whatever you want it to be.  There’s no reason for it.

Okay, I am not a particularly radical Christian and I don’t feel called to confront everyone who uses the word “holiday” instead of Christmas.  The truth is that some don’t know Christ and have no reason to celebrate Him.  I wouldn’t expect them to compromise their unbelief.  Yet, the fear of offending others sometimes leads our elected officials to ignore the truth.  This is Christmas!  It isn’t a generic holiday.  To ignore that is more than just staying away from a certain faith, it is ignoring history and simple definition.

So, if you don’t want to celebrate Christmas, don’t.  I don’t care.  Go to work, make your days as normal as possible.  Fine with me.  Just don’t try to take away my celebration.  And, by the way, look around and ask what the celebration is all about.  Under all the craziness is a story about love.
